Simply put ripping out old tile to make way for new is much more work but it lets you see everything underneath. If water has been making its way under the existing tile to the floor you may have more than a replacement job on your hands. Ripping up a wood floor isn t a delicate job and if the boards are nailed down and you don t have any plans for recycling them it doesn t have to take long either. Break up multiple tiles at a time and remove with floor scraper.
In this case use a floor scraper to remove the pieces of padding that remain stuck to the floor. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you ve removed several tiles. Depending on the construction the tile may be attached to bare cement a plywood or mason board underlayment or even affixed to a previously installed floor.
