Residual Noise Floor

Residual noise floor. A common way to lower the noise floor in electronics systems is to cool the system to reduce thermal noise when this is the major noise source. Measuring background noise is straight forward in busy urban locations general office spaces and factories. The residual phase noise measurement is a valuable technique used to identify the phase noise contribution of a single component as part of a system design. Between 2009 and 2014 we worked together amongst many other projects on the text he eventually published as the fall dossier this gave me a detailed insight into whitehead s working methods.
It is also referred to as the ambient or residual noise. As i briefly outline below i worked with whitehead on the large collection of notes he had amassed pertaining to the film. In audio engineering noise can refer to the unwanted residual electronic noise signal that gives rise to acoustic noise heard as a hiss. In experimental sciences noise can refer to any random fluctuations of data that hinders perception of a signal.
This signal noise is commonly measured using a weighting or itu r 468 weighting. Designers use this infor mation to select individual devices for their signal chain which in aggregate meet the phase noise requirements for their complete system. A room measured at seat level may show a noise floor of 40db a but a measurement made at the ceiling mic location near an air handler may show a noise floor of 65db a. Using this approach external noise sources such as the input clock and power supply are correlated at each dut output and can therefore be effectively cancelled.
The noise floor limits the smallest measurement that can be taken with certainty since any measured amplitude can on average be no less than the noise floor. Residual noise forms the noise floor when designing a radio receiver for any radio communications system it is necessary to ensure that the performance of the radio receiver matches the performance required.
