Remove Wax From Polyurethane Floor
Wipe the floor dry with a second cloth and apply the mineral.
Remove wax from polyurethane floor. Never use wax oil soap or acrylic floor dressings such as mop glow on your polyurethane finished wood floor. Fold a clean cloth or rag in half and work the mineral spirits into the wax. When the whole floor is stripped of wax to remove wax buildup give it a final cleaning by mopping the surface of the wood with hot water. When cleaning hardwood floors less is more.
The steel wool will remove wax residue from the wood grain. If waxing a floor that doesn t need it the wax will react negatively with the finish and create a cloudy look. There is more than one way to remove wax from an existing finish but none guarantee success. Scrub the area along the grain of the wood while the solvent is still wet using a green kitchen scrubber or 0000 steel wool to loosen the wax.
Nothing adheres well to wax and even after cleaning the wood grain can become contaminated. Go over the area once more with a pad of 0000 steel wool moistened with mineral spirits. Use a circular motion to scrub the wax from the floor. Scuff sand the bubbles with 120 grit or finer sandpaper depending on what you re finishing.
If you just need to spot clean a waxed polyurethane finish make a 3 to 1 solution of linseed oil and turpentine in a jar. A small application of cleaner on a microfiber mop is all that s needed to clean your floors. Wax can penetrate the wood making future paint or stain finishes or touch ups difficult or impossible. Floors that have a polyurethane finish do not need to be waxed.
Take care to dry any remaining water as standing water can easily damage the surface of hardwood floors. You would use coarser paper to scuff a floor than you would a tabletop. If the bubbling is extensive sand with a palm sander or if you re finishing a floor a floor buffer and a sanding screen. Sanding down the finish can drive the wax even deeper because the friction of sanding heats up the wax.
Dip a 0000 steel wool pad in the solution then dip the pad in pumice and. Rub the rest of the wax off the floor with a rag. Try working in sections with a mop and going over it with a dry microfiber cloth on a dry mop.
