Remove Rust Floor Drain
Basement floor drain covers are often made of cast iron which is susceptible to rust.
Remove rust floor drain. A screw attaches some floor drains so use the screwdriver to remove them. Dealing with the floor drain cover isn t a task you have to do every day. Try unclogging cleaning or removing rust from the drain before you discard it. If yours doesn t have a screw or you ve just taken the screw out you can easily pry the grated top out of the floor.
Wipe the area and properly dispose of the oily rags. Vinegar also has a lingering smell and you definitely don t want that in your house. Don t forget to wipe the area with a wet cloth to remove the vinegar otherwise the acid will remain on your floor and damage it. Remove all traces of the rust penetrant oil and solvent using a water based grease cutting household cleaner.
If the cover is beneath standing water for a period of time it will rust. I tried to clean the cover before but the more i clean the more it seems that these chunks of brown rusty chips come out. Removing the rusted drain cover may seem daunting because there is nothing to grab onto or to pry off with a tool. If your shower is clogged and you had planned on replacing the drain check it for dirt rust or clogged items.
Using vinegar and soda is a very effective way of removing rust from the vinyl flooring. Work on clearing out any debris and general gunk that you can with your hands using the rubber gloves and placing what you pull out into the plastic. By looping 16 gage wire through the slots of the drain cover you can make an efficient lifting or prying point on. Because it doesn t require daily attention your floor drain cover can become rusted without you even noticing.

This often happens when a basement floods due to melting rain or snow or when the drain clogs and gray water backs up into the basement. Over time basement drain covers may become frozen in place with rust.
It dries in about 30 minutes after which rust can be wiped clean.
