Refinishing Floor Baseboards
Once the first coat has dried lightly sand the baseboard with 220 grit sandpaper.
Refinishing floor baseboards. Next use a 120 grit sandpaper to clear away the old finish and then switch to 220 grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. The alternative is to remove the quarter round and reinstall with caulk after finishing the floors. Follow the directions on your polyurethane finish to apply it but remember to use slow long strokes to prevent bubbles from forming.
Sand baseboards whether unfinished or painted with medium grit sandpaper on a sanding block. Use a paintbrush to apply polyurethane finish onto the baseboards. Remove dust with a tack cloth and then apply a second coat. Clear all the dust away and then secure any loose nails.

If there are gaps in the floor refinishing the floors will not solve this although it may make it slightly better. Spread chemical stripper on the faces with an old paintbrush and scrape it off with a paint.
