Rainforest Floor Plants
Rainforest luxuriant forest generally composed of tall broad leaved trees and usually found in wet tropical uplands and lowlands around the equator.
Rainforest floor plants. Rafflesia arnoldii which bears the largest flower on earth exists among the sparse population of plants on the tropical rainforest floor. They have no chlorophyll. The amazon rainforest alone provides a habitat for over 40 000 plant species. Hence leaves of plants growing in such an ecosystem usually have a waxy surface with pointed tips to allow excess rainwater to run off.
The amazon rainforest is known for being the largest tropical rainforest in the world covering much of brazil peru colombia and other countries in south america. Saprophytic plants are inconspicuous and small few are more than 8 inches 20cm tall. They include many types of mushrooms and other fungi. The forest floor is covered in a layer of decomposition known as detritus.
Rainforest pigs include wild boars and warthogs. On the forest floor the lack of light means that it is difficult for many species of plants to survive. These darkness loving plants live inside of dead and decomposing trees branches and other rotting plant material. Such an adaptation prevents the growth of algae on the leaves which would otherwise block sunlight and reduce the ability of.
The hot humid climate of the world s tropical regions provide ideal conditions for plant life. Rainforests usually occur in regions where there is a high annual rainfall of generally more than 1 800 mm 70 inches and a hot and steamy climate. Some other species that thrive on the tropical rainforest floor include elephants mongoose tapirs southern cassowaries okapis armadillos rainforest pigs and gorillas. They dig large holes in the ground wait for a rain storm to attract insects and fish to the water and feed on them.
There are many types of plants that are only found in rainforests in tropical regions of the world. This plant is a parasite of rainforest lianas. Because of its strategic location the amazon rainforest is naturally a home to the world s unique and most diverse plant and animal species. The plants that are able to survive in the low light conditions of the forest floor are adapted to warm moist environments and of course very little sunlight.
This fertile ground cover is important for nourishing the plants that are capable of surviving in the dark under layer of a forest. The world s tropical rainforests are home to an incredible number of plants. As animals decompose along the forest floor nutrients seep into the soil and help feed plants that would otherwise be malnourished. It is estimated that these contain around 170 000 of the world s plant species.
There is so little sunlight on the rainforest floor that very few plants grow there but there are animals that love the decaying plant matter that can be found.
